So the Sky suspended Prince for the time she is in Russia. Not surprising, but it looks like they did it for financial considerations, not to open a roster spot. If they had, they would have signed someone to get them integrated in the team within a day or so of suspending Piph. In the long run, I have no issue with this move as long as the team is healthy. Pokey seems to run the team as if it is a little league baseball team- everyone gets to play. I would love to see her more selective on subs and shorten her rotation to 8 or 9 players and learn to plan her sub pattern better.

Fanbetty..are you really not seeing the depth on this team? Or, are you choosing to be critical?

The suspension of Prince I won't get into...but obviously you forget last year, when Syl and EP went down, and Ticha was a mystery.

It is NOW that you play your players, and put them on the floor and see what they give.

Of the Sky bench players, Pokey has to know what Campbell, Quigley, and Zoll can do...and she needs to find it out now...not when someone goes down...and they have to play.

It's early. As Pokey begins to see what she has...just like everyone else does...you'll see her tighten up to 7- 8 core players.

Take a look around the box scores...you see all teams are pretty much doing as Pokey is...(playing everyone)..that's the way it is early..unless as team has minimal changes.

She's not running a "little league team"...she's doing what coaches do...which is assessing her team.

Fanbetty - Pokey addressed this issue at the Coaches Corner last Sunday. When asked if she was going to bring in a sub for Prince she said that Prince will be back so soon that if they brought in a sub it would only be for one week and not worth it. They expect Piph back right after June 30th, so by the time you sign someone and try to teach them the plays and integrate them into the team its time for Piph to come back.

It made no sense to bring in someone else to sub, particularly when we have good bench players who need playing time.

I think that the whole thing got complicated when Piph hurt herself in Russia. This was right at the time that we could sign someone (and Pokey said that she had some players in mind, but most don't want to sign for a couple weeks and they wouldn't be that good anyway). But then there was a couple days when it looked as if Piph wouldn't go back to Russia to stay here & heal and then they ended up wanting her back after all.
So who are we going to bring in that could actually help us for a couple weeks? Who is going to be better than someone on our bench? It's not as if there is another player even close to Piph's caliber waiting to sign a temporary contract.

Actually one can see that Pokey decided not to bring anyone in because the depth of this team is much better. Better than I thought...as Alie Quigley and Campbell have proven to be good pick-ups...and of course the versatility of EDD helps as well as TYoung able to go F-G, and Shay Murphy and Allie Quigley can go G-F.

Pokey seems to have decided to take this time without EP to give her bench the opportunity to step up, and so far they have.

I think Pokey should use every opportunity to give minutes to players so when players have foul trouble, injuries, etc. She knows who she can rely on and the roles they can play.

Let's not forget all of these WNBA coaches are under great pressure because of the blitz from draft, to preseason, to reg season. Unless a team has minimal changes...the coaches are still developing players...and they do that in the game.

Keep coaching Pokey...Clap

I agree that depth on the team is not only better, it is competitive with the best in the league. Young at forward, Swords (against the less dominant centers)in the middle, Quigley at guard all can score and compete. The rest are decent fill-ins as needed in case of injury or foul trouble. I don't believe bringing in a temporary 11th players is needed. My point was that I felt we were more effective simply using our current roster and that we were already playing too many players.

When you have the talent, you can NEVER play to many players. You play your players every chance you get so when you need them they have chemistry within the system.

Naturally your core is about 7 players that you play most. However you get your bench playing time when you can because you never know. You look at how Pop handles the Spurs...he goes 9-10 players deep because he USES his talent.

Pokey is doing that because she's able with what she has. At this point there no reason not get your players on the floor...and the opponent and game situations determine how deep you go in your bench.

The Spurs are the model basketball franchise though.  Aside from having the entire free agent class of a particular summer agreeing to join forces on the same team, they're the way a basketball organization should be run.  Every year people say they're too old and then they sign some unknown player from Europe or the D-League and he comes in and blows up in Pop's system.  If the Sky were run at anywhere near the Spurs' level, I would be ecstatic.
